Warning: This story is rated T for Teen for mild violence.
Author's Notes: I do not own any of these characters except for Nikushimi, Ankoku, Kawa, and Mai. All Naruto characters (c) Kishimoto Masashi.
Fight for your Existence
The sun was beginning to set as I prepared to leave my campsite. It was going to get dark soon, and that's just the way I like it. As I bounded through the tree, I could sense someone nearby. I readied myself for an ambush and reach for a kunai. The next thing I knew, a shower of shuriken came raining down on me. My blood splattered onto the trees around me as I tried to stifle a cry of pain. The enemies appeared from behind the foliage with their weapons ready. I was too weak to fight; my previous battle had left me wounded, and my body was still exhausted.
I fell to my knees and gripped my left arm. I had pulled out three shuriken from one spot on my arm, which was now throbbing with pain. As my blood spilled onto my hand, I began to feel lightheaded. The enemies leaped forward with the intent to kill me, but suddenly four blurry figures appeared from nowhere and stopped the foes dead in their tracks.
The last thing I could remember was a girl reaching out and touching my arm, saying "It's okay. We'll protect you..."
The crackling sound of a fire grew as my senses awakened. I opened my eyes slightly, just enough to see blurred colors. As I tried to moved, I noticed that my body ached all over. I moaned dramatically and flopped back down on the ground. I felt someone tap me on my shoulder, so I opened my eyes. I saw a fish on a stick above my face, and it smelled delicious.
'Here. Eat." I sat up, looked at the girl, looked at the fish, and snatched it from her hand. I turned away from her and silently gnawed on it. Soon after, everyone except for me and the girl who gave me the fish was asleep. She walked over to me and sat down. She was kinda dressed like a guy, but she was pretty. She looked at me and asked, "How do you feel?" I kept quiet. Her voice was awkward for a girl, but I loved looking at her eyes. They were a very light shade of lavender, and they were full of mystery.
"What is your name? Why won't you speak? Please say something..." "...You're pretty." She looked stunned. "Th-thank you." "Sooo...what's you name?" "Neji." "I'm...Nikushimi." She looked puzzled, so I quickly changed the subject.
"So, uh, do you like...dresses?" "No. I'm not a girl, if that's what you were thinking." My face turned bright red as I noticed that Neji was kind of boyish.
"Oh, ah-ha-ha, sorry about that. It's just, your face and hair...wow. You're a pretty-boy." So I wouldn't embarrass myself any further, I went to sleep. The next morning, Neji and the rest of his team, whose names are Tenten, Rock Lee, and Gai-sensei, took me back to their village, which was my home long ago. They asked if I needed help finding a place to stay, and I told them that I could manage.
I lied.
I sat on my favorite hill--the one I used to sit on when I was little--and looked at the clouds passing by. In that moment, I didn't care about anything. As long as I could watch the sky, I'd be content. I lied down, and soon I was asleep.
A little while later, I was woken by a cool breeze. I pulled my knees up to my chest and wrapped my arms around them. Since I was only wearing a belly-shirt and shorts, I felt like I was going to freeze to death.
"Are you okay?" I turned my head to find a blonde-haired blue-eyed boy standing next to me.
"You'll get sick if you stay out here." I looked around and noticed that the sun was almost gone from sight. I looked back at the boy and noticed that he had whiskers on his face.
"N-Naruto!?" "Huh? How do you know my name?" I stood up and said excitedly, "It's me, Nikushimi!" I hugged him, and at the same time, nearly stopped his breathing. When we were little, I was his only friend and visa-versa. But five months after we became friends, I was taken away from the village.
"Niku-chan! Stop!" I let him go and he gasped for air.
"Sorry. Are you all right?" "Y-yeah...Niku-chan, I miss you too, but you don't have to almost kill me. Now why are you out here in the cold?" "Uh..." "You don't have a place to stay, do you?" "Nope." "C'mon..." He threw his jacket at me, turned around, and started walking. I put his jacket on and followed him.
"Thanks for letting me stay with you, oniichan. And...thanks for letting me borrow your pajamas..." "No problem." Naruto said with his usual goofy grin. I crawled into bed and cuddled him. All night long I couldn't stop thinking about Neji. I could see it in his eyes, the same thing I've seen in Naruto's eyes and my own. Being alone, rejected, trapped; I saw it all.
"*Yaaaawn* Good morning, Naruto-kun," I said as I stretched my arms. I looked over at him only to find that he was still sleeping. His right leg was hanging out of the bed, and his arms were around my waist. He was talking in his sleep saying, "No, mommy, you're warm...don't make me go to Pockyland...I wanna go to Ramengakure..." I rolled my eyes and replaced myself with the pillow, which he began to drool on.
"*Sigh* Same old Naruto..."
